Who does it produce Cashmere in Italy?

Cashmere is one of the most exclusive yarns in the world and it is produced only in certain areas of the continent.
The first producer of cashmere in the world is China, followed by Mongolia, which stands out for the production of the finest cashmere, then Afghanistan, Iran, India and Pakistan, less appreciated due to the lack of regions able to offer a suitable habitat for the production of this precious wool.
It is interesting to know that Italy is also an important producer of the luxurious yarn; in particular there are two geographical areas recognized for this: the area of ​​Biella in Piemonte region and the Umbrian textile district.

The district of Biella

The district of Biella is among the oldest industrial districts in the world and it is recognized in the textile and clothing sector for the production of wool. This is because the territory has two main characteristics: its position at the foot of the Alps which facilitates the breeding of sheep from which the fleece is obtained to make the yarns and the presence of particularly fresh water streams that allow the fleeces to be washed with a low amount of detergents.
The district also has another peculiarity: it specializes in all stages of the production process, including auxiliary processing of the wool textile chain and the production of machinery for the industry.
Currently the district has 1,575 companies, both international leaders and SMEs, concentrated in 82 municipalities. The yarns produced, in addition to be naturally in Cashmere, are in Merino wool, alpaca and mohair.

The Umbrian district

The Umbrian textile district is another very important area for the production of Cashmere that has its roots in the region's past, in the art of weaving that has characterized local artisanal production for centuries. The textile vocation is rooted in Umbria, from knitwear to embroidery, to the production of fine yarns such as Cashmere. In Umbria, Cashmere is produced and processed in hundreds of specialized companies, mainly concentrated in the area of ​​Lake Trasimeno, which takes on the nickname of "Cashmere Valley": in this area tourists come to visit the natural beauties of the area and the authenticity of historic villages, for gastronomy and also for shopping for Cashmere garments.
The production of Cashmere in Umbria reaches peaks of absolute excellence: the Umbrian district alone produces 40% of the production of Cashmere Made in Italy and the most important knitwear brands made with the best Italian Cashmere were born from the region.
